The Old Round Church

The Old Round Church; Permission to use photo by Richmond Historical Society

The Richmond Historical Society owns and maintains the historic Old Round church, located just off Bridge Street on Round Church Road, in Richmond, Vermont.

The Town was organized in 1795 and is recognized for being home to the National Historic Landmark Old round church, a 16-sided church built in in 1813, considered to be one of the first community churches in the country. Presently, weddings and community events are held at the church. The cedar shingle roof is failing and the property surrounding the church needs improvements. A fundraising effort was begun in 2005 and continues.

Replacing the roof constitutes phase one of a multi-year renovation and enhancement project for the Round Church.  Other project goals include installing a fire sprinkler system, adding exterior lighting, repainting the building inside and out, and landscaping the parking field and adjacent grounds.  Total cost for the project is estimated at $235,000.

The Round Church receives no regular support from any federal, state or local agency. Maintenance and repairs are funded by rental fees, card sales and donations to the Richmond Historical Society.  The RHS is actively seeking grants from government and private agencies to subsidize the renovations.  However, many grant-providing agencies require matching donations and other evidence of community support for the project.

If you wish to make a tax deductible donation (RHS is a 501 (c)3), please mail directly to:
