First Ventilated Fly
Fishing Reel
The first ventilated fly fishing reel was developed in Vermont. It was
Charles Orvis of Manchester who devised a method of allowing fishing lines to dry quickly
on the reel. So successful was this invention that the company he founded in 1856 remains
today as one of the country's most well-known suppliers of fishing and sporting goods.
