Sam connor of Cavendish

Have you ever heard stories of people seeing their own ghosts? Here is a
fascinating tale from the town of Cavendish, VT.
"Long ago--sometime early in the last
centruy--a Vermonter named Sam Connor told his friends about the strangest adventure of
his life. Once, while crossing a local swamp at night, he suddenly became aware that he
wasn't alone.
He looked around in the gloom, his heart
pounding.
Then he saw it! Someone was coming toward him
through the eerie marshland.
Connor didn't break stride and neither did the
stranger. As the other traveler got closer, Connor couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Why, it was absolutely impossible!
Later, he told his friends what had happened.
The sensation, he said, was exactly like '...when a man walks towards a long mirror and
sees his image coming with equal pace to meet him at the glass.'
What Sam Connor saw was his own double!
When the two were close enough, the look-alike
paused and spoke to the dumfounded Connor. But this was no idle conversation between two
weary travelers. The double got right to the point; he warned that one year from that very
day, Sam Connor would die. Some of Sam's friends believed the story, some didn't, but as
the fatal date grew closer, Sam Connor found the deadly prediction impossible to ignore.
Then, all too soon, the dreaded day
arrived....."
